How experience of depersonalisation effects empathy

This study is looking to recruit candidates aged over 18 to attend a 1-hour testing session at the University of Greenwich in London. You will receive a £10 Amazon voucher for your participation.

If you are interested in this study, please email the team.

The present study is a requirement of BSc H psychology with counselling at the School of Human Sciences, University of Greenwich. This project has received Ethical approval and Risk Assessment approval from the Psychology and Counselling Research Ethics Panel.

Before the study, you will be asked to send a picture of your face in a neutral expression with a white /light background to be modified prior to the study lab as part of the study to be able to add the stimulus to the image. Please do this by emailing. After the image has been sent, you will be invited to book your appointment for the lab test.

In the first part of the study, you will be asked to complete the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale test (CDS-29), which shows how people sometimes experience detachment from the self. In the next step, you will be involved in a task where a picture of yourself and other faces will be shown in different circumstances, and your skin conductance will be recorded. As follows, you will be asked to complete the Toronto empathy questionnaire (empathy is known as the capacity to understand and feel emotions). The total time estimate for completing all the tasks is around 60 minutes.

You are free to ask any questions before participating in the experiment.

Your participation in the study is completely voluntary and £10 voucher will be given upon completing the study. You are free to withdraw yourself or your data by using your personal code at any time before 30th March 2024, with no consequence. This project is not expected to involve risks of physical or mental discomfort or harm. The results of this project will be coded in such a way that your identity will not be physically attached to the final data that you produce.

The image of your face will be deleted at the end of the study that will occur on 30th April 2024.
